Meet Snapper!
This year’s advert features a little boy who purchases an… unusual Christmas tree: a Venus flytrap plant! As the plant grows the boy bonds more and more with it, but his family force the plant outside in the cold when it gets far too big for the house and starts destroying things, replacing it with a “traditional” fir Christmas tree.
Hurt from his friend being outcast for being different, on Christmas morning the boy takes his present from under the tree and takes it outside, placing it at the foot of his Venus Flytrap friend, Snapper. The family follow him with their presents, but oh no, Snapper gobbles them all up! But don't worry! Snapper was only helping to unwrap the presents, and spits out all of the gifts for the family to enjoy.
The John Lewis Christmas Picture Books
When John Lewis release their Christmas adverts they sometimes commission a picture book alongside as keepsake for fans. The Plum Agency has proudly represented illustrators who have worked on past books including Monty The Penguin (2014) illustrated by Catalina Echerverri, Moz the Monster (2017) illustrated by Katy Halford, and Excitable Edgar (2019) illustrated by Jo Lindley.
This year our Plum Christine illustrated the official picture book of Snapper’s story, written by Lucy Feather. Christine’s traditional, soft textures, emotive characters, and beautiful colour palettes brings Snapper and family to life in a whole new format, enabling children to enjoy the story and it's wonderful message for years to come. Christine worked incredibly hard with Nosy Crow Publishing to create this magical picture book that Christmas fans young and old can enjoy, and have a piece of this magical Christmas advert with them forever.
